FAQs
SONDER YARN CO.? NOT ESPACE TRICOT?
In case you missed the announcement, Lisa and I (Melissa) recently sold Espace Tricot to Naomi Endicott and Stephanie Earp who are busily making it their own with fresh energy and perspective! Speaking for myself, the Espace Tricot years were among the most rewarding and creatively supportive of my life. I had the space to explore, and develop my abilities doing so many things that I loved. Sourcing beautiful products? Check. Learning the basics of knitwear design? Yep. Working with a mill to develop new yarn lines? You bet. Learning the process of hand-dyeing yarn? Yes! All of these represent such a small part of the full and demanding work required to run a yarn store and, truthfully speaking, they are the things often eclipsed by the daily administrative and management tasks critical to keeping a business afloat. As time went on, both Lisa and I found ourselves yearning to flip the balance, to find more time to spend on our passion projects. The decision to sell the store was a natural one and the decision to start up Sonder Yarn Co. more natural still.
WHERE CAN WE FIND LISA NOW?
Lisa can be found at @postvelum documenting her new journey of infinite possibilities. Her passion for fibre has not abated so you may just continue to see her popping up at all of our favourite fibre events.
ARE THE ESPACE TRICOT AND SONDER YARN CO. COLOURWAYS / YARNS THE SAME?
The original Espace Tricot colourways were created in a collaborative process with local hand-dyer, Annie Paaren (@anniepaaren), who patiently worked with Melissa and Lisa to bring their vision of a uniquely beautiful palette on Grace to life.
As time went on, and demand grew, Espace Tricot purchased the palette in its entirety from Annie for the purposes of being able to build upon it and expand across bases.
Tanya joined the Espace Tricot team during this time, to help establish a dye studio in the Espace Tricot Atelier and to focus on expanding the growing collection.
Sonder Yarn Co. eventually purchased the branded yarn business from Espace Tricot and, while most of the original colourways remain mainstays of the palette, many new colourways have since been added. We look forward to sharing them with you!
WHERE DOES YOUR YARN COME FROM?
All of our merino wool is ethically sourced from Argentina, Peru, and Uruguay and our Bluefaced Leicester and Masham wools come from small farms in the United Kingdom which are bought at auction from the British Wool Marketing Board. None of our yarns are from farms that engage in mulesing practices.
WHAT PRODUCTS DO YOU USE TO DYE YOUR YARN?
We use professional acid dyes in combination with citric acid to dye our colourways. Once dye has set and the yarn has cooled to room temperature, it is then rinsed thoroughly with lukewarm water and Soakwash (unscented).
HOW SHOULD I WASH MY SONDER YARN CO. YARN?
While some of our bases include superwash fibers, we strongly recommend hand-washing your knit garments separately in cool water with gentle liquid soap and laying them flat to dry in order to preserve both the vibrancy of the colourways and the longevity of the fibers.
While we guarantee the colour-fastness of our hand-dyed yarns, a small amount of bleeding on the first wash or two is entirely normal, particularly with very saturated colourways.
When combining these with lighter colourways, we recommend first knitting a swatch and washing it to see the effect. If you decide to proceed, consider using a colour catcher on first wash.
If bleeding is excessive or continues to persist, please contact us so we can assist in resolving the issue.
Please note that our Sunday Morning 4 Ply and DK weight yarns are non-superwash and should always be hand-washed and air-dried.
For more information about our yarns please visit our Bases page.
WILL YOU WIND MY YARN?
At this time we do not offer ball-winding services but may add this option in the future!
WILL YOU REPLACE SKEINS THAT BECOME TANGLED IN THE WINDING PROCESS?
We encourage you to untwist and wind your skeins very carefully and to go slowly for the first few rotations on a ball-winder / swift to ensure your yarn is arranged properly and unwinding smoothly. Some yarns are more slippery than others and single-ply yarns can slide around during the dyeing process so please proceed with caution. We do not offer replacements or refunds for skeins that have become tangled during the winding process.
DO YOU OFFER WHOLESALE?
As we are just getting started we do not yet have the capacity to take on wholesale orders of our hand-dyed yarns but we never say never! Please send us a message via the Contact Us page if you are interested in potential future partnerships.
Our mill-dyed ‘Sunday Morning’ lines can also be found at local stockist Espace Tricot.
